How to make a payment QR code
- Pick the payment methodUPI (India), PayPal.me or crypto.
- Enter your payment IDYour UPI ID, PayPal.me username or wallet address. Double-check it.
- Add an amount (optional)Leave it empty to let the customer type the amount, which is best for a shop counter.
- Test with a small paymentScan it with your own app and send a small amount before you print.
UPI QR code
UPI QR codes work with every UPI app in India: Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM and banking apps. The code contains a standard UPI payment link:
upi://pay?pa=shopname@okbank&pn=Sharma%20Store&am=250.00&cu=INR&tn=Order%201042
- pa is your UPI ID (VPA), the only required field.
- pn is the payee name shown to the customer.
- am fixes the amount; leave it empty for a counter code where customers type the amount.
- tn is a note, for example an order number.
The money goes straight to your bank account through UPI. We never see or handle the payment. For a large shop, your bank or payment provider may offer a merchant QR with automatic payment confirmation; a personal UPI code like this is ideal for small sellers, freelancers, tutors and collecting money among friends.
PayPal.me QR code
If you have a PayPal.me link (paypal.me/yourname), the code opens it with an optional amount and currency, for example https://paypal.me/yourname/20EUR. The customer logs in to PayPal and confirms. Create or find your PayPal.me link in PayPal under Get paid → PayPal.me. This suits invoices, market stalls, donations and splitting bills internationally.
Bitcoin, Ethereum and Litecoin QR codes
For crypto we use the standard payment URIs that wallet apps understand:
| Coin | Format | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Bitcoin | bitcoin:ADDRESS?amount=0.001&label=Donation (BIP 21) | In BTC |
| Ethereum | ethereum:0xADDRESS?value=… (EIP-681) | Converted to wei for you |
| Litecoin | litecoin:ADDRESS?amount=… | In LTC |
We validate the address format (legacy and bech32 Bitcoin addresses, 0x Ethereum addresses) to catch copy-paste mistakes, but we can't check that the address belongs to you. Crypto payments can't be reversed, so send a small test payment first.
Keep your payment QR code safe
- Watch for stickers placed over your code. Fraudsters cover payment codes at shops with their own. Check your codes regularly and use a frame with your shop name so a swap is easier to notice.
- Never use a "receive money" code to pay someone. Scanning a QR code is for paying. If someone sends you a code "so you can receive money", it's a scam.
- Customers: check the name shown in your payment app before you confirm. The QR safety scanner shows who a code pays before you open your wallet.
Print a payment sign for your counter
Make your UPI or PayPal code, then download it as a PDF or PNG and add it to a sign with your shop name. Branding makes it easier to notice if someone sticks a fake code over yours. The Outline + pill or Banner below frames with "SCAN TO PAY" work well. You can also put "PAY" in the center of the code with the text option in the Logo section.
Amount or no amount?
| Situation | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Shop counter, market stall | No amount: the customer types it |
| Invoice, fixed fee, ticket | Fixed amount and a note with the invoice number |
| Donations | No amount, or one code per suggested amount |
| Splitting a bill | Fixed amount per person |
Checking that payments arrived
Always confirm the payment in your own banking or payment app before handing over goods. A customer's screen showing "Payment successful" can be faked. For UPI, most banks send an SMS or app notification for every incoming payment; many shops use a sound box device that announces each payment aloud.
Testing safely
- Scan the code with your own phone and check the payee name your app shows.
- Send a small amount (₹1, $1 or a tiny amount of crypto) and confirm it arrives.
- Only then print the code in quantity.
Multiple payment methods
If you accept several methods, make one code for each and label them clearly ("UPI", "PayPal", "Bitcoin"). Don't combine different payment links into one code; payment apps only understand their own format.
Frequently asked questions
Does this payment QR code charge any fees?
We charge nothing and never touch the money. Normal UPI, PayPal or network fees from your provider may apply.
Do I need a merchant account for a UPI QR code?
No. Any UPI ID works. For high-volume business use, your bank may recommend a merchant UPI ID with payment notifications.
Can I set a fixed amount?
Yes, for UPI, PayPal and crypto. Leave the amount empty so customers can enter it themselves.
Can I print a UPI "Scan & Pay" stand for my shop counter?
Yes. Fill in your UPI ID and payee name on the UPI tab, then click Print UPI Scan & Pay stand. You get an A4 or Letter PDF that folds in half into a counter stand, with your shop name and UPI ID printed under the code. More styles are on the printable templates page, and our guide How to make a UPI QR code for your shop covers testing and fake-sticker safety.
Which apps can scan a UPI QR code?
Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM, Amazon Pay and banking apps with UPI.
Is it safe to share my UPI ID or wallet address?
Yes. They let people send you money but not take any. Never share your UPI PIN, passwords or seed phrase.
Will the code stop working?
No. It is a static code with your details inside, so it works as long as your UPI ID, PayPal.me name or wallet does.
